Comprehensive transportation reauthorization includes key priorities to improve public health and air quality
WASHINGTON, D.C., November 6, 2021 — The House of Representatives last night passed the final version of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Framework, which now moves to President Biden’s desk to be signed into law. The American Heart Association, a global force for healthier lives for all, issued the following statement on provisions from the INVEST in America Act included in the bill:

“The final passage of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Framework, which prioritizes active transportation options, will be vital in making bicycling, walking, rolling and taking transit safer and more accessible. Investments in the bill will provide valuable and affordable choices to develop or maintain an active lifestyle across the country, particularly in historically disadvantaged communities. These provisions will be instrumental in not only improving public health in our communities but will also help reduce congestion and improve air quality.

“The American Heart Association is pleased to see a number of improvements to and increased funding for the Transportation Alternatives Program included in the bill. These measures will ensure more federal investment to local communities to build the infrastructure that supports physical activity and active transportation. By prioritizing wellness and recreation, communities can help improve cardiovascular health and decrease the likelihood of chronic disease.

“The creation or maintenance of sidewalks, bike lanes, trails and crosswalks will be crucial in promoting healthy lifestyles throughout the nation. States and communities will be able to use this funding to make their neighborhoods safer and more accessible to everyone. We appreciate Congress for taking action to prioritize the health and well-being of its constituents through the transportation reauthorization.”
