Pope Francis Demonstrates Compassion and Support for Diabetes Awareness

Rome, November 8, 2023 – (AP) – The Fand, the Italian Diabetes Association, will be received in audience by His Holiness Pope Francis on November 15, in celebration of World Diabetes Day, which, as every year, falls on November 14. This day serves to draw attention to the global impact of diabetes and the rights of those affected by it. The historic meeting, occurring for the first time in Fand’s history, will take place during the General Audience with Pope Francis, highlighting his strong commitment to health issues and the well-being of the sick. It also underscores his support for the association’s mission to improve the health and quality of life of people living with diabetes, which amounts to 4 million in Italy alone and one in ten adults worldwide.

Established in 1982 by Roberto Lombardi, considered the architect of Law 115/87, the foundation of Italy’s diabetes prevention, treatment, and care system, Fand has been a moral entity since 1993. It provides healthcare, moral support, assistance, legal aid, and social protection to citizens with diabetes. The association has received the gold medal of merit for public health. Since last October, Fand has its national headquarters and primary operational base in Rome, after being based in Milan for many years, where its legal headquarters remain. The relocation of its main headquarters to Rome is a significant step in getting closer to key institutional representatives, solidifying Fand’s role as an advocate in the public debate. The meeting with Pope Francis is a noteworthy outcome of the association’s efforts to enhance its ability to represent people with diabetes.

“I express, on behalf of our board and the many individuals that Fand represents, our heartfelt gratitude to His Holiness Pope Francis for hosting us on this important occasion,” says Emilio Augusto Benini, President of Fand. “This is an extremely meaningful gesture, once again demonstrating Pope Francis’ compassion for concrete issues that impact people’s lives. We firmly believe that his listening and support for the cause of people with diabetes are significant steps in combating this real pandemic affecting Italy and the world. It is also a step towards recognizing the right of individuals with diabetes to lead normal lives, with the best possible care and tools to manage their condition.”

This meeting between the Fand and Pope Francis exemplifies the intersection of faith, compassion, and a commitment to the well-being of individuals living with diabetes. It serves as a testament to the power of collective efforts in raising awareness and support for those facing this challenging condition.
